Cape Town Volunteer Center

In South Africa, ICVolunteers is represented by the Cape Town Volunteer Centre (CTVC).  As South Africa's first Volunteer Centre (originally Voluntary Aid Bureau), CTVC was started in 1979, as a project of the International Year of the Child. The present office then opened in 1980, first run by volunteers.

Mission Statement: "It motivates and develops effective volunteering through consultation, training, information and placement services for the benefit of all".

Today CTVC has approximately 300 member organizations not only in the metropolitan area of Cape Town and the Western Cape Province, but also in numerous other areas throughout the country. The CTVC is registered as a non profit organization and has also received its status as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) in terms of Section 18a of the Income Tax Act.

CTVC offers a range of services to both organizations and individual volunteer. Services include:

  • Developmental volunteering opportunities for unemployed youth;
  • Workshops  on the basic concepts of volunteering, effective management of volunteers;
  • Decentralised services at Satellite offices in Murraysberg (Central Karoo) and Mitchells Plain. Offices in Athlone, Khayelitsha and tredendal (West Coast) to be established shortly;
  • Recruitment and placement services and ongoing consultation and support of member organizations;
  • Ongoing promotion and media awareness of volunteering as a means of building vibrant communities.

ICVolunteers has mobilized in South Africa volunteers for a number of events, including the XIII International AIDS Conference (Durban, 2000), a meeting of the International Civil Society Bureau (CSB) of the World Summit on the Information Society (Cape Town, 2004), Workshop on Volunteer Computing for Africa and has cyber-volunteers working in Johannesburg.
