ICV Around the WorldSouth Africa Cape Town Volunteer CenterIn South Africa, ICVolunteers is represented by the Cape Town Volunteer Centre (CTVC). As South Africa's first Volunteer Centre (originally Voluntary Aid Bureau), CTVC was started in 1979, as a project of the International Year of the Child. The present office then opened in 1980, first run by volunteers. Mission Statement: "It motivates and develops effective volunteering through consultation, training, information and placement services for the benefit of all". Today CTVC has approximately 300 member organizations not only in the metropolitan area of Cape Town and the Western Cape Province, but also in numerous other areas throughout the country. The CTVC is registered as a non profit organization and has also received its status as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) in terms of Section 18a of the Income Tax Act. CTVC offers a range of services to both organizations and individual volunteer. Services include:
ActivitiesICVolunteers has mobilized in South Africa volunteers for a number of events, including the XIII International AIDS Conference (Durban, 2000), a meeting of the International Civil Society Bureau (CSB) of the World Summit on the Information Society (Cape Town, 2004), Workshop on Volunteer Computing for Africa and has cyber-volunteers working in Johannesburg. CyberVolunteersWe offer through the CyberVolunteering programme internship opportunities ranging from a few weeks to a few months, to new technology experts. Volunteers undertake field projects related to the work, network administration or to the development of software applications. Migration ProjectThe migration and language project started in Barcelona based on the need for language services for migrants. The project since involved 4 offices of the ICVolunteers Network, including Switzerland, France, Spain and South Africa, developing services for migrants who do not speak the language of a given country.
