Project details

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), which is held in two phases (Geneva 2003 and Tunis 2005), is the first summit of the United Nations to discuss issues related to the emergence and the actual development of the information society.

In December 2003, the Summit brought together 13,000 people including 44 Heads of States, Prime ministers, Presidents, Vice-Presidents and 83 ministers and vice-ministers from 176 countries. It integrated in particular two innovative parts: (1) On the basis of an all inclusive approach, the WSIS involves agencies from UNO, governments, civil Society, private sector and the media, so that it brings the multi-actors together. (2) It is held in two different phases (Geneva 2003, Tunis 2005).

The second phase of the WSIS focuses on the implementation of the Declaration of Principles and the Plan of Action, which is why it is a timely opportunity to consider specific action related to WSIS.

It is in this context that the Volunteer Family and the Youth Caucus of the Summit organized, on 24 March 2005 in Bamako a workshop on "Volunteerism, Youth and ICTs".

Participants included representatives from about 50 youth and volunteer organizations working in the information society.

The main objective of the workshop was to put in place a national working group to analyze models which allow the implementation of concrete projects in the field of ICTs, establishing new partnerships between the volunteer sector, other civil society organizations, local authorities, the government, the private sector. The working group will prepare a national report on volunteerism, youth and ICTs to be presented at the Summit of Cities in Bilbao and the Tunis Summit.
