CIVICUS has worked for over a decade to strengthen citizen action and civil society throughout the world, especially in areas where participatory democracy and citizens' freedom of association are threatened. BackgroundCIVICUS is coordinating the Eurasia International Digital Exchange and Advocacy (IDEA) Network project, as a response to increasing evidence that the Eurasia region is one of the regions of the world where human rights and fundamental freedoms are at gravest risk. Network StructureThe Eurasia IDEA Network is a voluntary association of international and national NGOs and other civic groups from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan. The Network is the principal platform of the project where civil society actors can share information, collaborate on advocacy strategies, and form a regional voice towards international dialogues and platforms. Knowledge and ideas are shared regularly within the network through email communication, advocacy campaigns, and during workshops and network meetings. In July 2009, the Network will gain a web-portal in which information on threats to civil society in the region will be distributed, and where members can collaborate and share resources in a secure manner. As a response to identified regional threats to civil society, network members have set up Thematic Working Groups (TWGs) to collaborate on issues that affect the development of civil society and human rights in Eurasia.
