Detalles del proyecto

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2013 represents the world’s largest annual gathering of the ‘ICT for development’ community. This forum will provide structured opportunities to network, learn and participate in multi-stakeholder discussions and consultations on WSIS implementation. This event builds upon the tradition of annual WSIS May meetings, and its format is the result of open consultations with all WSIS Stakeholders.

The WSIS Forum 2013 was held from the 13-17 May 2013 at the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Headquarters in Geneva. This year the Forum attracted more than 1800 participants from over 140 countries.

Since 2002, ICVolunteers has played an active role in the WSIS process, serving as the Focal Point of the WSIS Volunteer Family from 2003 to 2005, and later taking part in annual meetings and activities. In 2011 and 2012, two of ICV's program were recognized as WSIS Success Stories, with an award for E-Environment for GreenVoice in 2012 and the presentation of E-TIC the year before.

Roudtable on Cybervolunteerism

This year, ICVolunteers had an presentation booth and also showed panels of its GreenVoice exhibition. A roundtable about Cybervolunteerism held on 16 May 2013 brought together actors working with cyber-volunteers.

For the past 20 years, ICT volunteering has played an important role in the development of the Web and continues to be a catalyst for innovation in cyberspace. ICT volunteerism provides one of the solutions to the problem of building human capacity that helps nations harvest the benefits of the digital age for development purposes. It also helps under-served communities to be part of the Information Society, particularly in developing countries, by enabling the sharing of valuable ICT skills and knowledge.

The session organized by ICVolunteers aims to show-case successful examples of volunteering in cyberspace. It also looks at definitions and boundaries related to technology-related volunteering. What is the place of cybervolunteering in the digital world? What are future perspectives for this activity in the area of social media and rapidly advancing mobile technologies?

The debate touches on the bridges between employment and volunteerism, between the reality built around cyberspace and grassroots projects. It further looks to the future, and the potential of cybervolunteerism as a key development tool.
