CyberVolunteering

The CyberVolunteers Program recruits, trains and coordinates volunteers with skills in information and communication technology (ICT) for development.

Volunteers participate in local, regional and international projects for a period of several weeks or months, offering their skills in areas such as web or software development, system administration and content generation.

The Program values in particular South-South exchanges, but also includes South-North and North-South cooperation. By doing so, it aims to help create a global information and shared knowledge society accessible to many. The CyberVolunteers Program benefits from the patronage of UNESCO-Switzerland.

The Program: An Overview

The CyberVolunteers Program was launched in 2005. A 'Cyber-Volunteer' may offer his/her skills through:

  • Providing technical assistance related to computer systems, both online and onsite
  • Designing and implementing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) training courses
  • Building capacity through training of trainers
  • Empowering local populations in ICTs
  • Helping set up web sites

The Program creates opportunities for volunteers to gain experience and offer their skills. Our partner organizations can learn valuable skills from cyber-volunteers and, in turn, are then able to teach others.

ICTS to Aid Development

CyberVolunteers sees information and communication technologies (ICTs) not as an end-goal, but rather as a tool for development, in that ICTs empower local populations and stimulate their economy. The added value generated by the digital society, in particular through the Internet, offers a unique occasion to share knowledge of ICTs in real-time. The volunteer, being from a different culture, is the mediator between cultures for knowledge sharing, be it transferring existing knowledge or acquiring new knowledge.
The CyberVolunteers Program has projects in Brazil, Congo (Brazzaville), France, Mali, Senegal, South Africa, Switzerland and Uganda.
